A Summer Day

Here are some posing photos from our afternoon at the pool. It was very hot!!! We were lucky enough to have some parent help today, allowing us to all have some free swim time after our lessons. We are all improving so much, working hard towards our swimming goals and improving our strength in the water.

Dear Whanau

Our Year 4 / 5 / 6 camp to Woodend Christian Camp in Woodend will take place on Monday 31st March - Wednesday 2nd April.  The aims of our camp are to provide students with an educational experience outside the classroom, to foster team/whanau spirit and provide opportunities to co-operate with their classmates and to support our school values of responsibility, respect, achievement and self-belief/strength.  In order to use this wonderful camp and its facilities the trust ask that all campers participate in a gospel programme on Monday evening.

We will require parents to support with supervision over the three days and two nights.  We may also require extra parents for the drop off and pick up of children from camp, leaving school at 9.30 on the Monday and leaving Woodend at approx 2pm on the Wednesday to return to school.

if you can provide assistance with transport and/or supervision for all or part of the camp.  We need as much parental support as possible in order to ensure that our camp takes place.  We will need six parents to come with us for the entire camp and enough transport to and from Woodend for 56 people.  I will need to confirm all parental involvement by Friday 7th March.

The cost of the Year 4 / 5 / 6 camp this year is $91 due to the Red Cross Grant allocating $20 per child per camp, allowing us to reduce the cost.  The cost includes all activities, accommodation and food.   If your child took part in the Raffle Fundraising last year, this will be deducted from your total.

We would appreciate you completing the contact information, medical details, transport and parent help form below and return these back to me by Monday 3rd March.

Surf Education

Today we had two lifeguards come into school to teach us about staying save at our beaches and how to be sun smart. After our class session we headed over to the pool. At the pool we learnt to save each other and kick with body boards. Looks like everyone had a great time.

Class Treaty

Welcome letter

Kia ora to all parents and children from Room 8,

I hope you all had a relaxing time over the holidays and pleased to be back at Burnham for another exciting year.

This is my first year as a teacher; I have just completed my degree with AUT. Previous to this, I was in the Royal New Zealand Navy, as a Medic. I am Canterbury born and bred but have recently lived in both Auckland and New Plymouth. I have many interests including softball, running and walking my two small dogs. I am looking forward to a great year at Burnham Primary School and getting to know your children.

Our inquiry focus for this term is CALL ME LOYAL - which will look at many aspects of what it is to be a New Zealander and the concept of Kiwiana. This term will also be packed with various other events including -
  • Swimming – Weeks 2 – 4 (12-1pm), finishing with our school swimming sports on Tuesday 25th February.

  • Math – focusing on Place Value, Money, Graphing and Mapping.

  • Writing – Recounts and Instructions  - we will be writing our autobiography and demonstrating a “how to”

  • Reading – vocabulary and retelling /sequencing

  • PAT and STAR testing is happening along with running records and other testing to
find your child’s needs in order to provide the best learning programme.
Please make sure that your child’s hat and vest is at school everyday.

All Year 4, 5 and 6 children will be on camp at Woodend on the 31st March until the 2nd of April. As a class, this is an excellent opportunity to get to know each other and work
co-operatively. The cost of this camp is reduced to $91 after a grant from the Red Cross and those who sold raffle tickets will have that deducted.  Further information will be out in two weeks time, however if there are any parents who are interested in helping on this camp please feel free to email me with your expression of interest.

Home think is part of our weekly study.  Your child has a home think book that will come home on a Monday and will need to come back to school on a Friday. Uncompleted work will result in it being finished at lunchtime.Basic facts, spelling and their choice of 15 - 20mins of nightly reading are the basic expectations. There may also be other items.

There is a link on the school website to complete your 3 three wishes for 2014. It would be marvelous if you could fill this in over the next week. Please make sure you keep up to date about what is happening at school through our newsletter. If you are not receiving it from
your child please visit
www.burnham.school.nz or http://burnham8.blogspot.co.nz.

I look forward to meeting all families in the next few weeks at meet the teacher and our learning conferences; alternatively you can contact me via email on hayleyharrison@burnham.school.nz.

Kind Regards

Hayley Harrison
